Some of the answers may be along the lines of:
- to make you happy.
- to get more exercise.
- for companionship.
- you always had a dog growing up so wanted the same now you are an adult.
Or like me you were begged by your children so much you finally gave in!
All perfectly good and valid reasons, after all a dog is a man's best friend, right?
But what if I told you that as well as all of the above your canine best friend has another hidden talent. It comes with every dog, has no conditions and can actually improve your health and the health of your family. How cool is that?
Researchers are starting to understand just why our dogs are so good for us, and it’s partly down to the microbiome. Our microbiomes are an ecosystem, and like any ecosystem diversity is key!
Your home environment is full of different types of bacteria and microorganisms which contribute to your microbiome diversity. This diversity plays an important role in keeping your immune system in top shape.
Just like us humans have our own unique skin and gut microbiomes, so do our dogs. Our dogs share our homes and the spaces we live in. It makes perfect sense that some of their unique microbes will be hanging around just waiting to make best friends with our unique microbes.
That means that as well as your microbes you also have some of your dogs. In fact, one study found that microbial communities on adult skin were more similar to those of their own dogs than to other dogs. The researchers even went as far as to say that they could pick a dog out of a crowd based solely on microbiomes. 1
You see, dogs love to play outside. They roll around in the grass and the mud, investigating the outside world by sniffing and licking. Then come back inside and roll around on the bed or the sofa and sniff and lick bringing the outside in.
Now this might be something that makes you go urgh! It’s actually really good for your health and the health of your children, and can actually play a part in training your immune system to recognise and react appropriately to things like dust and pollen. 2
In fact, children who have pets or spend time around animals are less likely to have immune reactions than those who don’t. 3
Going back to diversity, you can see that owning a dog means you are exposed to more types of bacteria which means you are more likely to have a balanced microbiome and a more robust immune system.
So, the next time your dog comes bounding in from outside with muddy paws and licks your face don’t be so quick to have a go but instead enjoy your best friend and the benefit of all their microbes!
